Interceptor heartworm preventativeThe veterinarians at Stratford Hills Veterinary Center are very excited about an improved heartworm preventative, Interceptor, and are recommending it for canine heartworm prevention to our patients.

And now, through May 31, 2015, we are offering 10% off a year's worth of Interceptor!

Interceptor is as effective for heartworm prevention as monthly products that we are all more familiar with, such as Heartgard Plus. However, it is much more effective against intestinal parasites and is considered safer for certain dog breeds.

Protects Against Intestinal Parasites

Interceptor is labeled against Roundworms and Hookworms (as is Heartgard Plus), but is also labeled against Whipworms. Whipworms are found in 20.5% of dogs who pass through shelters across the country. By some accounts, it is more frequently seen than roundworms in this country. However it is largely underdiagnosed, since the tests that are used in many veterinary hospitals do not detect these eggs readily.

Whipworms are very difficult to eradicate from the environment. The eggs, which are microscopic, can persist in the environment for up to seven years, no matter how clean a yard we keep! All of that adds up to a dog who may be frequently exposed to eggs, and in whom the infection may go undiagnosed for a long period of time. This allows the worms to develop to the point of causing significant disease, ranging from diarrhea, inappetence, anemia (low red blood cell count) and electrolyte disturbances.

Safer for Some Dogs

Certain dog breeds, including the Collie, Australian Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, Long-haired Whippet, McNab and Silken Windhound, are commonly affected by a gene mutation that makes them very sensitive to a specific class of drugs. This class of drugs includes the main ingredient in many commonly used heartworm preventatives. The main ingredient in Interceptor is different and is safe, even for these breeds that may be affected.

Interceptor is a once-a-month chewable tablet, with the same monthly cost as Heartgard Plus. However, with the additional benefits of preventing dogs from becoming infected with whipworm, and being safe for even ivermectin-sensitive dogs, Interceptor is the best heartworm preventative out there and we are happy to recommend it to our patients.

Give us a call at (804) 272-7544 if you would like to purchase Interceptor for your dog and get 10% off a year's worth supply.

Or call us if you have questions about Interceptor, the screening tests we use at Stratford Hills Veterinary Center for intestinal parasites, or the MDR gene mutation. We would be happy to give you more information!
